It's no secret that my favorite moments as a photographer are the ones I spend under a canopy of stars... Recently, I was able to get out for an evening of shooting at Cape Kiwanda on the Oregon coast. It was a new moon and the skies were dark, so I hiked up the sand dunes to photograph Haystack Rock under the soon-to-be dazzling Milky Way. I was exhausted by the time I got up there, but I was eager to finally see the galactic core in all its glory above the iconic rock! ...But the moment never came. I arrived, out of breath, about an hour before the planned alignment; I scurried around the viewing area taking photos of the ocean during twilight, when a sudden fog bank rolled in! It stayed for the remainder of the night, and my dream shot of our galaxy over Haystack Rock was a bust. My consolation prize, though, was the subtle glow and foggy layers surrounding the rock beforehand; I keep relearning this important lesson, to always snap whatever you can, when you can, because you never know when things might get a bit hazy. This animated piece, "Subtle Shroud", is my tribute to that pristine moment when your eyes adjust to the darkness of the night, and the shroud of the day's light fades from your retinas. Any scene that is perceptible to us is a work of art, a sculpture of electrons and other vibrations, a tapestry of sensory fibers woven together by the intricate machinery of our minds. Whenever I imagine scenes from the past, whether they're of Ancient Rome or my own ancestors around the turn of the nineteenth century, my mind inevitably envisions things in black and white, or on rare occasions a muted sepia palette. Popular media has engrained those dull scenes in my imagination, largely because of the evolution of photographic and videographic media themselves. But of course, that's not how things really were. Our vast and vibrant world has always been here! Our predecessors explored scenes as beautiful and prismatic as the ones we all enjoy today. Hot springs were dazzling pools of hues, glacial lagoons were frigid chunks of white floating in a sea of azure, and island palms were as green as they are today. Sure, the dyes and inks might have been manufactured differently and had different tones, but settlers in the Old West still had gorgeous rainbows and brilliant sunsets to feast their eyes upon! When I think about this fact, it gives me hope for the future in a broader sense. Every photographer arrives at their destination full of optimism. Today's going to be the day! The sunset clouds are going to be fantastic! I'm going to capture a dozen meteors streaking past the Milky Way core! The aurora borealis will provide a dazzling backdrop for this epic Bigfoot shot (a long exposure taken while he sits perfectly still, of course)... Then reality sets in. It's raining. There are too many clouds. There aren't enough clouds. The meteors never show up, or Bigfoot had too much caffeine in the afternoon. It happens. The photo shoot goes on, of course. We snap our shots, sometimes hundreds, sometimes thousands, in hopes of capturing that one perfect moment, but sometimes we come home empty-handed. It's those final moments of the shoot, that **Slow Fade**, that I think resonate with everyone who's ever held a camera hoping for gold. In those moments, the real essence of what we've captured isn't found in the scene, but in ourselves. Despite this slow fade, we'll be back next time. Carl Sagan once said: "The cosmos is within us. We are made of star stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself." He was right, of course; our fundamental components were forged in the stars themselves, and with any luck, humankind will return to them some day. Our path there will be a wild ride, though; try not to get dizzy. This image is a composite taken at two different times and places, melted into one. White Sands National Park affords beautiful views of rolling sand dunes; the Sierra Nevada in California allow for a clear view of our Milky Way galaxy. --- In the middle of the day on June 28, 2021, I lazy-minted a piece called "Stardust Rising" with the above caption, and I listed forty-two of them for forty-two hundredths of an ETH each. A naive price point and supply for sure, but why not pay tribute to two of my favorite galactic authors, from two different worlds, in one fell swoop? Alas, the edition never took off, and I completely removed it from that platform before it got a chance to ever be truly minted to the ETH blockchain. Well, now it is, forever. This will be the final piece I mint before the Ethereum Merge on September 15, 2022.
