"Afterimage" is a dynamic artwork filled with blended, changing colors that explores the edge between what is seen and what was seen. I wanted to capture the brief, beautiful moments our eyes see every day through unfolding waves of color as they leave behind a variety of patterns as they shift around, like the traces of vision after closing your eyes.
I wanted to continue my exploration of emergent patterns and shapes in the context of motion. Similar to my series, “phase”, there are moments of noise being expressed as different colors collide and collapse on each other. The effects of these collisions etch into the scene only to be washed over moments later.
I’ve applied a similar looping concept from my series, “Refraction”, in that different elements have perfect loops and their intersection can be seen but to have all pieces loop perfectly may not happen. I’m fascinated by this relationship - that “close but not quite” tension is a tangible aspect to these works.
Similar to that looping tension, “Afterimage” plays with a bit of distortion along different color bands and edges. There are moments of fracture where the scene gets broken up along different lines and then restructures back to a smoother view. Sometimes, the fractures etch into the scene, giving an interesting complement to the color collisions.
