Misti is a Cyborg, the term blending the words cybernetic and organism, was initially proposed in 1960 to describe a human being whose physiological functions are aided or enhanced by artificial means such as biochemical or electronic modifications to the body. The female cyborg is a fascinating figure that straddles the line between the technological and the biological. She disrupts the notion of the natural. She rejects the division between femaleness and technology. Yet she is also a trope that reinforces hegemonic ideologies of gender and race. This figure, a symbol of the possibilities of modernity, exemplifies the degree to which gender and race are entrenched in our understanding of future possibilities—the ambivalence of the 2 female cyborgs, and her ability to be both radically transgressive figures.
