This baby King penguin is slowly losing its baby down feathers, and starting to get its adult white feathers. This transitional period from baby to adult leads to some funny looking penguins with tufts of brown amongst the sleek black and white. The Antarctic Treaty was signed into effect December 1, 1959 to become the only continent with no territorial sovereignty. This was to ensure that all who came, came with peaceful purposes only, so no nuclear waste or production to be established here. This agreement also promotes international scientific cooperation in Antarctica and helps preserve the fragile balance of life.
