The Arquebusiers were only one of many Amsterdam’s civil guards. For example, there also was an expert army group of archers, and many more groups of specialists who protected the city against potential enemies. From the books that were kept since the Middle Ages, we know the city was divided into districts. Every night, in each district, a shift of civic militia men were watching their appointed neighbourhood. The Night Watch was designed as the masterpiece to shine on the walls of the headquarters of the company of 'schutters'.
