Much of my abstract work is born from experimenting with my software, learning new features and how to create different effects. I create lots of different types of images (abstracts, space scenes, landscapes and interiors) and use different software for each purpose.
In the early '00's my main 3D modeling and rendering software was Lightwave3D. Around that time Global Illumination and Radiosity were just becoming available to artists and I experimented with using "emissive" or luminous materials to create lighting effects that weren't possible before.
My goal here was to create a 2D-like 3D scene.
There are no lights here. Everything is illuminated by the reflected "glow" of luminous materials. It's commonplace now but was pretty radical at the time.
I added this render (created using my brand new copy of Lightwave 8) to my gallery in May 2004. I used the same technique a few weeks later to create "Circular Logic".
