Edition 1/1 • Non Fiction by Jack Simpson
On March 10, 2020 the Grand Princess Cruise Ship docked at the port of Oakland after being anchored at sea for 3 weeks under quarantine for COVID-19.
Working as a paramedic, I was deployed to the ship to treat and transport infected passengers and in my downtime I was tasked with photographing the emergency response at the port.
With camera in hand, I was able to circumvent security barricades using my medic/media credentials to access the loading dock during the decontamination process.
The smoldering sunset that evening was worthy of a science fiction film and foreshadowed a turn of events that would soon affect the lives of nearly every human being on the planet... and for that reason, my most prized photograph to date.
