While traveling across America, I decided to visit White Sands National Park, a photographers' paradise! I had driven 400 miles, and been delayed by both the border patrol and the line to enter the park. There wasn't much time to hike out and get set up.
I noticed the pattern of clouds in the sky, which echoed the shape of the dunes and immediately suggested a composition. As the sunset faded, I packed up to avoid becoming lost in the dune field in total darkness.
While I was walking back, the clouds gave one last pulse of color. With not much time to set up, I captured this final image, the best of the day and perhaps the best of my career.
