One day while talking to my therapist, she shared with me the concept of a "neuroceptive mismatch."
Our neural circuits help us distinguish whether situations or people are safe. However, if there is a neuroceptive mismatch, our nervous system interprets the environment as dangerous even when it is safe. This mismatch triggers a fight, flight, or freeze behavior… it causes social withdrawal.
With this piece I was exploring the feeling of disconnection or not being on the same page as someone else... feeling alone, scared, and shut down... but inside, you desire connection. We may feel there is something wrong and we may twist our reality, unintentionally creating separation. A shift in how we perceive and engage with the world may lead us to the closeness and connection we truly desire.
