The fog engulfed everything around me, leaving me in a white world. I couldn't see anything but a dense cloud that made breathing difficult. With time, the haze lifted, and I could see shapes: trees with ghostly outlines and old jetty posts emerging from the sand.
One moment there was nothing on either side of you, then something new would emerge from the fog beneath your feet or in front of you before vanishing again.
How long have I been lost in this strange, illusory realm? When I turned around to see who or what it was, there was no one or nothing there.
Maybe the universe is a delusion, and once I've walked far enough away from the start, all that's left are sandy footprints slowly dissolving into the soft sand.
