Suddenly our guide disappeared into the forest, emerging a few moments later with a bundle of wild pears and figs. Producing a knife from his pocket, he swiftly cut us some fresh offerings, proceeding to graft the stem of the cut fig onto another tree.
We ate, and continued the hike upwards - through the lush forest floor and towards one of six intact Monasteries, listening to stories of how the other eighteen had been bombed and plundered during WWII in a statement of defiance against Greece. Some of the protruding stone columns awash with only rubble, a stark reminder of the relatively recent decimation.
