"Day" is one of a series of three pieces inspired by the Apple TV adaptation of Asimov's Foundation books.
In the story, the empire is ruled for hundreds of years by the same man cloned over and over again because they believe that in him, perfection has been achieved for all time. They wish to preserve one man's personality and abilities forever, in the supreme conceit that no improvement could ever be necessary or desirable.
Three clones are alive at any one time - Baby "Dawn", Adult "Day" and Senior "Dusk". The elder clones in turn instruct the younger clones, who are raised to be an exact copy of the past. The empire stagnates and falls because nothing new is created to deal with an ever changing reality.
"Day" is the adult ruler, in the prime of her life. Re-imagined here as female, she is seen here in sharp relief against the colours and chaos of the world. She is filled with life and vigour, living in the moment but knowing soon that her time will pass.
