At dusk, however, the mood towards him shifts. The villagers keep their eyes low and avoid gazing at the backlit horizon. For on the rare occasion that he appears during these darkening hours it is always an omen of death. The village elders say that as the eyes and hands of this land, it is his duty to return souls to the earth when their time has come. He is not the cause of despair, merely a courier in the natural cycle of life.
