Daruma - is the Japanese way of pronunciation of the name Bodhidharma, impersonation of the patriarch of the Chinese Buddhist school and the mastermind of Japanese Zen.
In Japanese syncretism, Bodhidharma was equated with a deity and depicted as a Daruma doll. The owner buys a doll in the temple, writes his name on its chin, making a wish and draws a pupil in one empty eye socket to indicate the desire for a dream.
