The Illuminati were a real group in the 1700s that drew on the rules and symbols of Freemasons. The term is used today to refer to a possible secret powerful cabal conspiring to create a New World Order. It is also used more loosely to refer to people of wealth and power working together toward common ends. I used it to refer to a general belief that the world is ruled by a shadow elite.
