This was a hard shot to process - I'll be honest! Some people got to watch this during a live event I did. That was exciting and scary because I had never worked on this one before. I let the audience vote on which one to process, and this one was the choice! It was particularly hard because of all the shots were handheld which brings in all sorts of variables. Washington D.C.

I met this gentleman in the wilds beyond the desert. He was so curious and interested in Glass. Absolutely transfixed, he asked me everything about it, then tried it on and played and played and played! He loved it! He started using it more and more, going through all my emails, watching videos, seeing my text messages, asking Google questions, checking weather... and then he started showing all his friends and telling them about it - he was so excited. This is yet another epic sculpture out there, and it gets even more epic when the sandstorms roll in. They had fun plan here to burn it down. As I recall, they handed out hundreds of tiny little mirrors to people on the clearest, hottest, sunniest day. We all took the mirrors and aimed them at the head, trying to make it erupt in flame, but it never really worked. It did give me a great idea for a big wooden ant sculpture with a huge steampunk magnifying glass. The magnifying glass would slowly rotate every day until Saturday when it would be at the perfect angle to catch the sun and burn the ant. Burning Man, Nevada

I like how in the backstreets of Beijing people just kinda hang out and sit around, relaxing and thinking. I guess you don't see that too much more nowadays. They all make for good photo subjects too. No one seems to mind, even though they may be a bit confused as to why you are taking a photo! I usually resolve the confusion by walking over to them after and showing them the photo... it makes them happy and we have a nice little interchange! Beijing, China

As an event at a French chateau was winding down on the final evening, we all dispersed to take late-night photos in the dusk. There were good angles everywhere. One of my favorite was up under this tree. But it was also very interesting to watch where everyone else walked. It was kind of like a private photowalk... I find it endlessly fascinating to watch other photographers while I am also taking photos. I don't know why this is! Paris, France

The French know how to build a beautiful prison! On the downside, it held up to 1,200 prisoners at a time, which sounds more like a French subway. They don't like you using tripods in here. I asked if the punishment was to just leave me in the prison while I take the photos. And then, when I stopped using the tripod, they would let me out of prison. This seemed like a pretty good compromise to me, but they did not find it amusing. Paris, France

It was my first time in Maui, and all I knew about it I got from Lost. I loved that show. Too bad it ended so badly. But I always loved this talk by JJ Abrams that he gave at the TED conference. He talked about having a "Magic Box" and you never really show people what is inside. I ended up speaking with him at a future Google TED-like conference. He went after me and said amazing things about my photography. God I was so... I don't know the word. There may be some German word for what I was feeling. Maui, Hawaii

The little village of Saiko. I don't know if it is always relatively empty or just this one day, but hardly anyone was around. I did see this one older gentleman sauntering around, and he happened to saunter right into the frame! A lucky grab! :) This "look" for this photo is a bit experimental, but I kind of like it. To achieve it (this is Photoshop-heavy-jargon I'm afraid!), you can duplicate the layer then do some extreme sharpening and a black and white conversion using something like Silver Efex Pro. After that, you can change the blend mode to Hard Light... it makes an interesting effect! Mount Fuji, Japan
