After talking my way up into the cockpit of the LC-130 on the way to landing in Antarctica, I got to be chatty with the pilots although I was trying not to distract them so we didn't crash. They told me many horror stories! One time, they said, they were trying to land in total white-out conditions. They had no idea where the ice-shelf was for landing. Well, that's not entirely true. They knew they were at the right GPS, but they could not tell if they were 50m or 10m from the landing. They said it was like "looking inside a giant ping pong ball" - I definitely felt that here for a while and will never forget that description. On one of their landings, they said they hit the ground so hard that the wings flapped down and slammed into the ice. They were beyond repair so they had to take the plane apart and ship it back to Christchurch. This did not inspire a lot of hope as I slinked back to the cabin to put on my seat belt. Antarctica
