When I see tourists passing through Seoul, I often wonder how my city, where I've lived my entire life, appears to them. What are their perceptions and impressions? How do they differ from my own? This piece titled 'SEOUIUO35' (formed by symmetrically combining the elements of ‘Seoul’) imagines my hometown in Korea as a planet viewed from outer space. The planet “SEOUIUO35” is composed of various natural and urban elements as well as traditional and contemporary characteristics that all hum harmoniously as one. It includes: the national flower, Mugunghwa, pine trees, Seoul's architectural landmarks, and traditional Hanok houses. Each of these elements is portrayed with movement and small changes over time, aiming to express the vibrant, beautiful, and dynamic nature of the city as viewed from afar, from a stranger’s eyes. Existing in space, how would the planet “SEOUIUO35” be perceived? Beautiful and splendid? Chaotic and disjointed? Unfamiliar and intimidating? I invite you to explore it on your own, from many perspectives, and hold on to the novelty each new emotion brings just as a tourist to my country might (or an extraterrestrial to Earth!) 서울에 사는 사람이나, 살지 않는 사람 모두 서울에 대한 생각과 인상이 다릅니다. 때때로 길을 지나다니며 서울을 구경 온 다른 여행객들을 볼 때 가끔씩 내가 평생 살아온 이 도시, 서울은 다른 이들에겐 어떻게 보여질까? 라는 생각을 하곤 합니다. 작품 'SEOUIUO35'은 내가 아닌 다른 이들의 시각에 대한 순수한 궁금증을 가지고, 더 나아가 우주에서 바라본 한국의 도시, 서울을 하나의 행성으로 표현하여 만든 작품입니다. 'SEOUIUO35'라는 이 행성의 이름은 서울을 닮아 있다는 의미에서 'SEOUL' 이라는 단어를 대칭으로 조합하여 만들어졌습니다. 행성 'SEOUIUO35' 은 다양한 개체들로 이루어져 있는데, 각각의 개체들은 한국의 꽃인 무궁화, 소나무, 서울의 건축물들, 그리고 전통한옥 등 옛 것과 현재의 것, 자연과 도시가 하나로 융합되어 조화를 이루는 서울의 모습을 나타냅니다. 또한 이 모든 것들에 움직임과 시간에 따른 크고 작은 변화를 가미하며 어느 곳보다 화려하고, 아름다우며, 역동적인 서울을 표현하고자 하였습니다. 우주에 존재하는 행성 'SEOUIUO35', 과연 우주에서의 시각은 어떠할까요? 그저 아름답고 화려해보일까요? 아니면 아름답지만 낯설고 무서운 곳으로 느껴질까요? 각각의 다양한 시각에서 잠시 우주의 생명체가 되어 누군가에겐 익숙하지만 또 다른 누군가에겐 너무나 낯선 한국의 도시, 서울을 탐험해 보시기 바랍니다. [Kyujin Cho] “The Unknown” is a collection born from a deep curiosity about what, exactly, lurks in the deep. Over the course of evolution, some species have honed the art of attraction, like the flower. While others, like the elusive octopus, have perfected the art of concealment. Scientists estimate that there are over five million undiscovered species on Earth, but I have a feeling that the ones we don’t see, don’t want us to see them. With an insatiable wonder for these hidden inhabitants on our shared planet, “The Unknown” embarks on a journey to explore where these cryptic creatures lurk and what they might look like. Drawing inspiration from the natural world, my creations meld together various parts of living flora and fauna, such as flower petals, jellyfish heads, and translucent sea creatures. And although they may appear visually attractive (to us humans, at least), each component of my artwork serves a dual purpose- it must also be functional, each appendage a sharpened tool in the crucial fight for survival. (For instance, flowers petals on their bodies grant the ability to elude predators while simultaneously attracting a mate, or prey). Although the true appearance of these undiscovered creatures remains a mystery for now, they do allow us the opportunity to let our imagination roam free. They can be big or small, under our beds or from outer space, nobody knows. But as I craft each and every artwork, I humbly embrace the unknown, and hope by bringing them to life through my animation, I also bring them to life in your imagination, as well. There are still mysteries left in this vast world of ours, and I hope you have the chance to find joy in that. 저의 작품은 깊은 곳에 무엇이, 정확히 무엇이 숨어 있는지에 대한 깊은 호기심에서 탄생한 모음집입니다. 진화의 과정을 거치면서 어떤 종은 꽃과 같은 매력의 기술을 연마했습니다. 찾기 힘든 문어와 같은 다른 종들은 은폐의 기술을 완성했습니다. 과학자들은 지구상에 발견되지 않은 종들이 5백만 개가 넘는 것으로 추정하고 있지만, 저는 우리가 보지 못하는 종들은 우리가 그들을 보는 것을 원하지 않는다는 느낌이 듭니다. 우리의 행성에 숨겨진 거주자들에 대한 만족할 수 없는 경이로움과 함께, 저의 작품들은 이 신비한 생명체들이 어디에 숨어 있고 그것들이 어떻게 보일지도 모르는 것을 탐험하기 위한 여행을 시작합니다. 자연계로부터의 영감을 끌어내며, 제 창작물들은 꽃잎, 해파리 머리, 그리고 반투명한 바다 생물들과 같은 살아있는 식물과 동물의 다양한 부분들을 하나로 합쳤습니다. 그리고 비록 그것들이 시각적으로 (적어도 우리 인간에게는) 매력적으로 보일지도 모르지만, 제 작품의 각 구성 요소들은 두 가지 목적을 수행합니다, 그것은 기능적이어야 하며, 각 구성요소는 생존을 위한 결정적인 싸움에서 날카로운 도구가 되어야 합니다.
