The canta historia, or cantastoria is a traditional figure of oral literature and popular folk culture, a street performer who would take to the squares and tell a story in song, either ancient, often in a new reworking, or referring to contemporary facts and events. The stories told became part of the collective spiritual, mythological and cultural baggage of a community.
Famous are the Chitrakar women of West Bengal or the Sicilian cantastorie.
