An strange horror crept across his face as the room filled with faceless strangers, and he watched as the two companions he had been travelling with for the past few hours...or days?...embraced them with open arms, seemingly unaware that the very flesh of these creatures was a farce, a mockery of reality.
Sinking further into the couch gave only the briefest comfort as the cacophony of twisted laughter penetrated his skull. Each sharp wave front of sound filled the air with a lingering malice - for these nameless figures were the harbingers of That Which He Has Always Known: that he is unworthy, unwhole and unwanted. His self-narrative decayed and smoldered into the thinnest of parchments and his ego collapsed like a plastic cup as the sound took on a color; a burning, bloody red that filled the vision of his mind's eye.
Moments away from surrendering to this hellish experience, a soft voice pierced and dispelled the angry fog. He opened his eyes to find his companion right beside him, with a smile so warm it could soften granite and an extended arm made of iron and gold: "Let's get you out of here my friend".
On his feet and weaving through the crowd he found himself at the center of a vortex. The formless terrors took upon the appearance of friends and acquaintances as they came within his sphere, but there was a flash of red behind their eyes and they had knives for teeth - and they soon reverted to their shapelessness as they dropped into the shadows.
"Come here" his companion offered as the sound muffled into the distance and they entered a quiet room, where a few familiar - and real - faces were waiting.
They seemed a little nervous and spoke in tongues:
"Are you sure? The portal could make him worse"
"It's very deep, but it's a safe space"
"I think fractals are a bad idea"
"I'll take it down if there are any issues"
His friends instructed him to lie down on the bed, slowly, and direct his gaze up towards the wall behind his head.
Before he knew what was happening, the room had completely disappeared as he plunged into a green abyss - but before the lagging realization of his own oblivion gave way to terror, a curious, spiraling, tentacled presence greeted him.
A silly smile cracked his face as he discovered that the presence already KNEW. EVERYTHING. All the layers of accumulated human condition peeled away to reveal a version of himself that didn't know pain, or suffering, or humiliation. Nothing mattered any more but the joy of the present moment and they whispered a thousand conversations of pure knowing as he descended into the empty, black silence of unconsciousness.
This is a true story. Or at least, a true experience.
