I withdrew from the traditional art scene some time ago to develop software. While my work still appears in traditional print publications, there was no space for a conservative woman who believes in free speech post-2012 America.
I believe strongly in blockchain art. I was the founder of ArtBank, a mothballed Ethereum based digital art trading platform which attempted to do ad hoc royalty based NFTs in standalone clunky contracts compiled in the browser before NFT was even a phrase way back in early 2017. It never got traction because having a working product during the ICO scam craze was not what people wanted. I was the only one dumb enough not to understand a userbase was years away that could sustain the project. Only ICO scams made sense then.
It's likely Rarible itself in some way evolved from my whitepaper, and the many meetings I had with people. The founders are Russian, and and one is from St. Petersburg like myself. There have been many similar project attempts after I gave up on ArtBank, but no platform came even close to the exceptional level of execution of Rarible.
While it does hurt in some way that I could not as an artist bring my dream to fruition, the fact that someone did it as I envisioned, but way better, gives me great gratification. Progress in the world isn't made by scamming people out of money in a Ponzi scheme. It is done iteratively by being just a little bit better than the last person to attempt something.
I hope this work sells. Not because I care about money, but because it means the world I want to live in can exist.
