Joseph Campbell has studied thousands of hero stories and described this journey in his book The Hero of a Thousand Faces.
Any journey starts with a need or a decision to change something; the character leaves his comfort zone and moves towards the goal, but he invariably encounters great obstacles or a nemesis on his path. The adversaries will be defeated, and the obstacles surmounted provided that the character does not give up nor surrenders at the most intense moment.
Having made mistakes but still remaining in the game, overcoming all adversities, the character reaches his goal, grows and changes in spirit. At that moment, he is ready to go the next round, the next adventure. Thus begins a new journey, the journey of a hero...
