Hunger and misery shaped Chastain's personality. When his father, Yosiah, died, his mother and brothers thanked him for the feast, eating his entrails along with what little they had of rotten grain from the last harvest. Her family no longer lives, but they nurtured Chastain until his journey to the Kingdoms of Yore, in search of something of value.
