This blue flyer was the launch night of Jus’ House on Friday, 2 April 1993. The design was intended to signify unity, and the rose symbolised love and courage. I remember scribbling a sketch out while on air during the Breakfast Show.

I approached Malcolm Duffy, the resident DJ at Trade (a very popular gay night at Turnmills), to DJ as I hoped for a mixed crowd that I knew he could draw in. Jimi Polo was booked to perform his latest single live. Jimi was born and raised in Chicago and witnessed the rise of House music firsthand, so it seemed to be pot luck that he happened to be in the UK at the time of the club launch. Keith Franklin from KCC was booked for the guest DJ slot. Most House heads at the time were aware that Keith was behind and part of the infamous Bang The Party outfit, which released ‘Release Your Body’ on Warriors Dance in 1988, a seminal British House track that became part of the Acid House playlist during the Summer Of Love. Keith being an exceptionally talented DJ had his own following, so between the four of us and the co-promotion of the original Kiss FM crew, the opening night was a success.

No social media back then, just flying outside other DJs clubs plus mentions on the coolest radio stations in London drew a crowd that I knew would get off on the music in a disused railway arch with a mega sound system to boot. No fancy lights, no cocktails, gimmicks, or posers. The crowd was totally up for getting down and dancing with each other.

Unity, love, and courage - the launch of Jus’ House.
