As totality engulfs the day, the moon's silhouette against the sun becomes a haunting spectacle. Solar prominences , often several times the diameter of Earth, defy the eclipse's brief, eerie calm, erupting with violent energy. Prominences can extend several hundred thousand km above the sun. For comparison, the diameter of the earth is about 12,750 km.
