Art museums are full of imagery that depicts our capacity for brutality, but this is something seemingly relegated to the past, as though violence doesn't exist in the world today. If the purpose of art is to make the viewer feel something, then even if a work stirs negative emotions and causes us to reflect on our (in)humanity, it is a success. And there is a certain kind of beauty in the darkness.
