It’s not really common but if the grass is very high, female lions sometimes climb up a tree to get a better view of the savannah and therefore to better spot potential prey. In this particular case, my guide spotted something in a tree from very far away. To get a closer look, we decided to drive towards the tree and the closer we came the better we could see that there was a lioness in the tree.
We spent around 3-4 hours with this lioness because it was a very interesting sighting. When we spotted her, we were just waiting for her to climb down and to get some decent images. But after some time, two males from a different pride arrived at the tree and decided to rest in the tree’s shade and also wait for her to come down as they probably wanted to seduce & mate with her.
The situation got perfect when in the background a herd of elephants walked toward the lions. I was very curious about how the lions would react and how the encounter would turn out. But the elephants passed the tree in a friendly way and didn‘t come too close to the lions. So nothing happened.
After some time the two males were in a deep rest and the lioness decided to quickly climb down. Both of the males missed their chance and the lioness ran away. Unfortunately for us, our car got stuck and I didn’t get a single shot of her climbing down after all.
