Fish is considered a noble food, fundamental for rituals, festivities, exchange in social relations, and conviviality. Just like in agriculture, fishing activities can be rituals, large quantities or not. The indigenous people know the processes of reproduction and the migratory movement of the fish in the rivers, and from this knowledge they organize their fisheries. They use various techniques and different instruments; vegetable poisons, vines and tree bark, which stun the fish, bows and arrows, hooks, cone-shaped traps, and dams.
To recover the legacy of Ubaraja Suruí is to renew our ancestral strength. Composing his resistance songs with updated melodies, reaffirming his presence in a patriarchal entity being one of the protagonists of the first contact with non-Indians in the 1960s.
The Art - Creation Process
Art created with Photoshop and After Effects using the kaleidoscope technique with images of indigenous graphics and indigenous music mixed with current melodies results in a fascinating visual and sound experience. The basis of this artwork is a combination of images of indigenous graphics, which are intrinsic patterns and designs used as a form of artistic expression. These graphics can be extracted from different indigenous cultures around the world, incorporating their diversity and richness.
In Photoshop, these images were manipulated and duplicated in several layers to create a kaleidoscope effect, a technique that uses the symmetrical repetition of elements to form complex and mesmerizing patterns. In this case, the images of indigenous graphics would be multiplied and mirrored at different angles, creating a visual composition rich in nuclei and shapes.
The music of Uajara Surui (Elias' Grandfather) was carefully selected to complement the visual experience. It brings the traditional sounds of indigenous cultures, with instruments such as flutes, drums and chants, and combined with current melodies, such as electronic elements or contemporary beats. This mixture of traditional and modern sounds creates a unique atmosphere, where past and present meet in perfect harmony.
The result is an explosion of colors, shapes and, transporting the viewer to an immersive and inspiring experience that invites reflection on the importance of cultural preservation and the connection between tradition and innovation.
