Branding is a legal requirement to prevent theft of young cattle. In ealry summer cattle are rounded up from all parts of the ranch and brought to the corral. Yearlings are carefully sorted from their mothers and kept in a separate corral before the branding work begins.
Calves are roped and brought to the ground to enable inoculations and branding to take place. Calves born early are larger and stronger, occasionally be difficult to handle. At moments like this, ranch hands risk serious injury and close teamwork is essential.
The privately owned ranches are a disappearing feature of the Historic West. This project set out to capture the lifestyle and traditions before they are eradicated forever.
