Some women in history were forced to become handmaids and were stripped of their identities in every possible way. Every facet of their individuality erased. Even their names were taken from them. Instead, they were given titles taken from the names of their Commanders. This is why each one of the "Heartbroken Handmaidens" names start with "Of" because women were stripped "of" their indentity & dignity.
