A brightly painted red bench offers visitors a perfect spot for viewing changing tides and passing vessels here at the village of Knock in County Clare, Ireland.
From this small port on the historic Shannon Estuary, local residents would have witnessed Vikings, marauders and monks plying these waters over thousands of years. These days, large commercial freighters, small cruise ships and recreational boats pass by.
Only a few miles from this spot, the waters of Shannon River empty into the Atlantic Ocean.
