Way of the Warrior provides the largest window into my created world Forget Me Nots Land. Flatly painted symbols and icons are juxtaposed together with a loosely painted and impressionistic styled landscape where characters interact in the foreground. My artistic interest investigate contemporary society through the lens of Afrofuturism and storytelling. I use symbols and created characters to build narratives that analyze my personal cultural experience. In this painting I tried to capture the idea of bottled creative energy pushing forward in a world that is defined by canons of the past. My figurative characters break free from the landscape by being a visual clash in style. They were built using collaged elements such as jeans, yarn, and intricate ink drawings. The landscape has qualities that tie it to impressionism and expressionism in a visual sense, but its genesis began as a traditionally painted image that was later morphed and distorted using contemporary technology. I love playing games with art history and working towards a fusion of ideas that hopefully offer the viewer something new to consider. The way of the warrior is to learn from the past and adapt to the present. A true warrior doesn’t seek to emulate past ideas of greatness, but is always on a personal journey of discovery in hopes that they can one day be etched in history. The roads in Forget Me Nots Land lead to strange and new places and I hope they are inviting enough to explore.
