Stabilize 1, in it's physical form is 10 in by 8 in by 1 in (25.4 cm by 20.32 cm by 2.54 cm) and is a mixed media piece: strips of oil paintings on canvas, spray painted staples (on the top and bottom edges, not visible in image), and metal grommets on stretcher bars.
The Stabilize Collection is a body of work created throughout 2021, and continuing into 2022 by Veronica Bruce Woodward. This genesis KnownOrigin piece is also the "genesis" to the physical collection. This work spearheaded a new and exciting series for the artist. Woodward is known to reuse previous works to make anew within her interdisciplinary practice and is not afraid to destroy her own work. The underlying concepts of renewal through destruction and the continuity of change are key within her practice and evident in this work.
Stabilize 1, and the series which stemmed from it, was sparked by a cross country move from Chicago to San Diego in July of 2019. With the move, the artist chose to either sell, throw away, gift or keep some of her work. With a history of collage she chose to keep numerous portions of works as she cut them off of stretchers, keeping and discarding parts. In the early spring of 2021, she revisited the stored portions of old paintings and methodically tore them into 1 to 2 in strips. These paintings from her practice ranged from 2009 to 2018. She added black grommets towards the center of each strip as a continuation of her symbolic use of the circle and referencing a central axis. The process of making these works engaged all of the senses with the loud tearing of canvas, hammering of grommets, repeated use of the staple gun and physical stretching of the strips over the frame. This process resulted in a grounding, meditative activity. The work was created after finishing the work and preparation for a solo show, during covid and a time of selling and moving houses. Practically speaking, her studio was actually packed up when she made this work. She created small bins of tangible parts to work from easily, without the need for paint or much space. Woodward associates this piece and the collection to the ideas of stabilization through alignment in the body, finding center emotionally and spiritually, and the underlying tension that can be embedded within.
