Collectively known as ‘Ba Jia Jiang’, or, ‘Eight Infernal Generals’, the eight actually include four generals, two of which, General Fan and General Xie double as Underworld Policemen alongside Generals Gan and Liu, and the Gods of the Four Seasons. In this photo, two of the eight generals are performing a martial arts dance in a temple parade to ward off malevolent spirits before the temple deities arrive on their annual 'tour of their borders'. This is General Fan, one of the two deities featured in my book 'Voices from the Underworld' published in 2020 by Manchester University Press.
