When Lavarius turned to the dark arts Novick was shocked yet stood by his side until the inevitable disaster. Novick was hungry for power and tired of living under someone else's shadow, this would become his perfect window of opportunity. By tipping the Head of the Guild about what was going on with Lavarius and the others, and manipulating them into running and rushing a portal incantation, he knew he'd be the last of his kind with access to that knowledge, thus becoming irreplaceable to the Guild.
