José Julián Martí Pérez (1853 -1895) was a Cuban poet and politician. Democratic republican politician, essayist, journalist and philosopher, he was founder of the Cuban Revolutionary Party and organizer of the Cuban War of Independence. He has been considered the initiator of literary modernism in Latin America.
