猿の顔、狸胴体、虎の手足、蛇の尾などを持つ。西洋のキマイラのように複数の動物が合成された妖怪。『ひょーひょー』という奇妙な鳴き声で鳴き、夜に出没する。1000年代前後に出没したとされ、『平家物語』には、武士によって退治される物語や、退治されたヌエの祟りにまつわる物語などがある。

Like the Western chimera, this yokai is a composite of several animals.It makes a strange cry, 'hyoo-hyoo-hyoo', and appears at night.It is said to have appeared around the 1000s. In the 'Tale of the Heike,' there is a story about its extermination by a samurai and a tale about the haunting of a vanquished nue.
