Jimmy Charonne was an asshole’s asshole. Knuckles covered in gawdy jewels. Tan like a leather creamsicle. Brutally insensitive to anyone beneath him. Your classic rich, sleazy, wannabe-Rat Packer. A real third-rate Merv Griffin-ass motherfucker.
One of the most overrated talk show hosts in Hollywood history, Jimmy underwhelmed the airwaves, irritated guests and regularly belittled even his ardent fans. Yet somehow, he managed to stay on the air in the late-late-*late* timeslot from 1963 until his shocking demise in 1986. During a taping, he was mauled by a guest wrangler’s bobcat and then struck by a falling can light.Â
Jimmy arrived at the Chasm of Limbo: a purgatorial passageway to the other side. With its glowing staff, the mysterious Gatekeeper reveals the Ghost Bridge. Every soul must unburden themselves as they cross, in order to reach the Great Beyond.
No time for mumbo-jumbo, Jimmy mercilessly berates the Gatekeeper before embarking. Midway, the irritated Jimmy lunges for the staff. Their tussle sends the Gatekeeper plummeting into the black abyss. Left holding the staff, but unable to move forward *or* back, Jimmy waits 100 years.Â
Until a spirit appears, informing the host that any spirit to *destroy* a Gatekeeper must *become* the next Gatekeeper. Jimmy throws a tantrum. Although he has no choice, he does manage to negotiate a few minor conveniences. If he’s going to interview every mook, muttonhead and moron for all eternity, he’s gonna do it *his way*.Â
And yes, he quoted Sinatra numerous times during his whiny, self-aggrandizing negotiations.
How exactly does a slimy, schmoozing, glib, sarcastic and supercilious talk show host run the first Late Show in Limbo? If you want to know, you’re going to have to join and help us figure it out! This room will be tasked with developing a short in the form of a few segments of Jimmy’s talk show, showcasing the bizarre entertainment that Jimmy provides as he absolves the just-dead of their worldly wearies so that they can move onto the Great Beyond.
