Good vs Evil, Light vs Dark, Moral vs Immoral —all representing common dichotomies in religious, ethical, philosophical, and psychological contexts. Often perceived as dualistic opposites, humans grow to learn how the first should always prevail and the second should be eliminated. Western religious teachings perceive evil as an inhuman supernatural force, something that appears when we lose our connection with the divine. For many living on the edges of what is considered good or moral, this limiting division creates confusion —does our immorality takes away from our humanity? Born and raised in the eastern part of the world, I grew to value the complexity of virtue in a less polarised manner. In this work, which is a continuation of my exploration of medieval superstitions, I delve into the need of finding the perfect balance. Not in a way that rejects deviant characteristics, but rather one that acknowledges virtue as a result of honest reflection of our inner selves. Using as my base the highly erotic and provocative painting named “Witches Going to their Sabbath” by Falero, I utilize the swirling and stormy composition to create a metaphor for the eternal fight for righteousness. In this artwork two versions of myself coexist among witches and symbols of the devil, representing how morality is being achieved through turbulences and inner arrests. Me against I, a harmonious balance that consists of one’s self.
