Worldwide, most glaciers are shrinking or disappearing altogether. The Perito Moreno Glacier in Argentine Patagonia maintains a state of equilibrium, meaning that the glacier accumulates mass at a similar rate to that of its loss.
While visiting this iconic sheet of ice, I witnessed one of the most rewarding light events of my life. It was a stormy day in Patagonia, as most tend to be outside of the summer months. After I pulled out my camera to photograph this massive glacier, a small pocket opened up in the sky. Light blasted through the opening, splashed against the mountains and then an extremely vivid double-rainbow materialized out of thin air. The rainbow was so bright that it actually seemed to light up the entire scene.
It was as if the glacier was trying to tell me that there is still hope for some of Earth's wonders.
It may sound like doom and gloom, but if we don't do something soon, this glacier will start to shrink and disappear like many others on our planet.
