Sometimes, with fractal art, I search for certain shapes or themes to give the work more meaning than pure math. For this piece, I was looking for appropriately-shaped "cardioid bulbs" to match a heart shape. Cardioid bulbs are actually a fairly common shape in fractals -- for example, the main bulb of the Mandelbrot set.
This piece was created for Valentines Day on Feb 14, 2010. It has a related piece in the set, "scraggly bits", that is a less stylized zoom into the top section of this image. Created by layering several outputs of a related equation, captured from Xaos, one of my favorite tools for exploring fractals.
