This image isolates the Hydrogen within NGC 1499 The California Nebula from other elements and removes the stars.
NGC 1499 is a large diffuse nebula in the constellation of Perseus, nicknamed for the US state which it resembles. It is approximately 100 light years long and 1000 light years away in the Orion arm of the Milkyway. The gas is excited by the nearby star Xi Persei, to the right of frame, causing it to glow and emit light at specific wavelengths.
This image was shot with a dedicated monochrome astrophotography camera over multiple nights during December 2021. Over 7 hours of exposure was used to create this image.
