The Hoodenza is the first order of renunciates to ever exist, and the inspiration for ascetic spiritual practices through the ages. Monk initiates undergo rigorous training and periods of extreme isolation from the world and even from each other. These retreats are designed to provide a space for individuals to disconnect from the distractions of the outside world and connect more deeply with themselves and their inner being. A Hoodenza neophyte can spend weeks, months, even years in complete silence and isolation. By observing silence, individuals are better able to focus their attention on their internal thoughts, emotions, and sensations. They become more aware of the present moment and are better able to tune out the distractions of the outside world. This allows them to deepen their spiritual practice and cultivate a greater sense of inner peace and clarity.
These Silent retreats can be incredibly challenging, both physically and mentally. The monks experience extreme discomfort or pain from sitting in meditation for countless hours, and the lack of communication with others can be challenging, as the monks are often left to fend for themselves without any real guidance. The monk’s aim is to realize the Self, the unifying ground of all-being, and to identify the harmonic frequencies of Life and Death as they are experienced through the breath. Only after the monk initiates has fully mastered the flow of breathing and has an understanding of the frequencies of life and death will the training be complete and he can return to the company of the other monks.
