Bookshelf Machine by Boyane

A bookshelf is more than just storage for pages; it is a shrine to ideas, a vessel for carrying adventures, stories, and objects. Inspired by Chaekgeori, the traditional Korean folk painting of a scholar’s bookshelf, Parisian graffiti artist Boyane Zelechowski and his wife, children’s furniture designer Layoung Kang, collaborate to create a dynamic three-dimensional study/playroom they call the “Bookshelf Machine.” This video work transforms symbolic Korean objects—books, roof tiles, incense burners, traditional lanterns, and the Korean alphabet—into a mesmerizing, continuously moving scene that embodies the essence of children's playful imagination. The result is a captivating blend of tradition and innovation, merging the disciplined elegance of a scholar's study with the joyful freedom of youth. The "Bookshelf Machine" reimagines a bookshelf as a symbol of scholarly pursuit and boundless curiosity, proving that childlike wonder is at the heart of true scholarship.
