Articulation is just a fancy word for joint. To disarticulate is to separate at the joint. We often think of the skull as one or two bones: the skull and the jaw. It is actually a complex integration of many bones. This is evident in newborns. Have you noticed the "soft spots?" That's soft cartilage that allows for the skull to grow and make more space for the developing brain. Over time this cartilage ossifies to become bone. These bones meet and fuse to create non-mobile joints called sutures.

BPPV, or Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, is a special kind of vertigo. It's caused by small calcium carbonite crystals called otoconia in the inner ear moving from areas called the utricle and saccule to the semicircular canals. They don't belong there. As they move through the semicircular canals the brain perceives movement where there is none. In response the eyes move to keep up with the perceived motion then correct back to a neutral position. This eye movement is called nystagmus and is what contributes to the feeling of a spinning room. Once the otoconia stop moving so does the room.

The heart is vital in supplying all cells throughout the body with oxygen and nutrients. Bradycardia means slow heart rate. It can slow down for many reasons, and in itself is not a problem if it is compensated for by a larger stroke volume, or amount of blood pumped each beat. Many athletes have slow resting heart rates, and this is a sign of good heart health. Bradycardia typically does not cause symptoms until the rate drops below 40 bpm. When symptomatic, it may cause fatigue, weakness, dizziness, sweating, and fainting.

Joints are meeting points between two bones. Some common joints are actually a complex of multiple joints. At the wrist, the radius articulates with the ulna, the proximal carpal bones articulate with both the radius and the ulna, and the distal carpal bones articulate with the proximal carpal bones. This allows for sophisticated and fine movement control, but requires many muscles to operate. The wrist can flex, extend, radially deviate, and ulnarly deviate. Gait is a fancy way of saying walking. Physical therapists use a tool called Observational Movement Analysis. It's a skill developed around watching people do specific movements in order to help hypothesize where movement dysfunctions might be coming from. Walking is broken down into three basic phases: weight acceptance, single leg stance, and swing leg advancement. It can sometimes look pretty, but it can sometimes look ugly like a Christmas sweater.
