It’s about the water. The long dry season has left the land parched. The animals, thirsty and needing nourishment from the minerals that are only found here, have migrated back to the place where they know there is always water: Tarangire National Park, Tanzania. At the height of the rainy season, the animals spread out over 20,000 square kilometers, but when the rains end they always return here, to the Tarangire River, the heart of the migration. The park is over 2,600 square kilometers, but it’s only the sixth largest national park in Tanzania, where over 30% of the country has been set aside as a park or conservation area. Tarangire is known for it’s large elephant population and I saw my first wild elephants when we were barely into the park. They not only drink the precious water, but they love to have a mud bath too! During the peak season, the elephant population soars up to 3,000. But once the wet season begins, the elephants and other animals migrate outside the park onto the floor of the Rift Valley and the vast open Maasai Steppe. ----- ETHICAL WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY STATEMENT As a wildlife photographer, I put the animals first. It is important to me that I do nothing that would change an animal’s behaviour in any way, put any animal at risk, or cause harm to their habitat. I respect the animals and their environments, and always aim to maintain a safe distance that does not interfere with their behaviour or cause them undue stress. I never bait or lure animals for the sake of a shot, and I do not manipulate the scene in any way that could alter the animal's natural behaviour. I spotted the cubs up on the kopje well before sunset. The parents were lying in the grass below and the thought went through my head that they would be called home when the sun went down. I love to sit and just watch the animals. I’m in no rush to move on or capture as many different animals as possible. I am happy to wait and watch. As each moment ticked by I got more excited by the possibility that it might really happen. I positioned the vehicle so the sun would go down behind the cubs if they descended the rocks in a direct line to the parents. As the light began to fade, the mother lion made a sound and sure enough the cubs ran down to her in a direct line. After waiting so long, the moment it happened went by in an instant! As a photographer I have learned over the years not to simply photograph what is in front of me, but to visualize the best possible scenario that might happen at the location and be ready for that. On a warm sunny African afternoon in Ngorongoro Crater, most of the animals have had their morning meal and are ready for a nice rest in the shade. Being the kings and queens of all the animals, the lions have no problem lying right out in the open for a big sleep without a concern in the world. My favourite location on my African photo safari was Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, and watching the elephants was my favourite thing to do. If I ever get an opportunity to go back, I would spend all my time in one place and get to know an elephant family. The Serengeti provides endless opportunities to observe and experience wildlife interaction and elephant families are fascinating to watch. The mothers are so protective of their babies! I guess all mothers are like that, but the elephant mothers are always touching the babies with their trunks and pushing them underneath their bellies.
