In the preparatory phase, I wondered for days how best to capture the theme of "forging the future" and the symbolic location where the resulting piece was to be displayed. Sticking to my specialty - semi-surreal portraiture; and as a sparrow deftly builds nests, my oil mellifluously flowed through my hand to my canvas.
I drew inspiration from a beautiful visionary, albeit a fictional character, focused on a technologically advanced future and Themis, the Greek goddess of balance and justice.
I reimagined this character as a woman that has inspired change and a more balanced world. In this piece, several symbolisms are present. Including the "truth-seeking ball or orbs of black chakra" with the yin-yang (a prominent symbol of balance), a tanzanite gem commonly used to symbolize dignity, truth, judgment, and longevity.on her forehead. Canary birds, symbolic to the Memory African Square Museum. An earring that serves as a tribute to the Senegalese flag, and a tourmaline necklace (the rainbow gemstone). It symbolizes tranquility, equanimity, and reconnection to roots.
