Gebo is a symbol of giving, of generosity and sacrifice, as well as of receiving and of the exchanging of energies. It represents the cyclical reciprocity of giving and receiving – when one chooses to give up something precious, the gesture either will be – or already is being – reciprocated through the receipt of an existing or future blessing. The greatest gift we can ever give is our time. We only have so long on Earth, and so the decision to commit our time to a person or a project is also a decision to spend some portion of our only life dedicated to that thing. We are sacrificing a part of our life – giving it away, if you will – and this gesture is far more valuable than any material thing money can buy. Our time is a part of us; it is a part of our soul. And our time – a gift we can give to others – is also the greatest gift we ourselves have ever received.
