If we discovered a true sentient Artificial Intelligence would we recognise it?
Would it talk like us? Would it think like us?
When it emerges, how long will it be in front of us before we realise what it is?
AI will do incredible things for humanity. We are already seeing Machine Learning programmes create human faces that don’t exist and produce complex and varied artworks made from nothing but words.
This isn’t something we should fear, AI will compound our creativity.
It is a tool (for now) far more powerful than anything artists have used before. It can show you your imagination, your ideas, your dreams faster than ever before. It can expand your vision in ways you weren’t expecting. It becomes a collaborator in your artistic process.
I am using it to bring my paintings to life. To make them transcend from the physical world into a high dimensional, almost infinite space. Allowing them to exist in constant possibility.
This artwork exists in many forms. It is the physical oil painting. It is a long format “Emergent” digital file as an NFT as well as 4 shorter “Iterations” and it is a separate video only visible using Augmented Reality. But really these are all just fractions of the artwork. Glimpses. The whole exists in a space unknowable and transdimensional. As such the painting loses prominence.
The painting is no longer the whole artwork, just A Relic of it.
This work is a nod to two artists whose work introduced me to this space, Pindar Van Arman and Claire Silver. The abstracted face that skirts in and out of existence is based on one of the AI faces from Van Arman's ‘Emerging Faces’ NFT.
Claire’s discussion of AI has helped shape my own thinking on the subject, that we are witnessing the brith of something new. That we are creating “the cave paintings of what will become”. The title of the piece is a reference to her (for those who like an anagram).
There are four "Iterations" of this piece, which are shorter experiences through the artwork. The original oil painting will be sent to the first person to purchase this NFT, if they want. Subsequently it will not be tied to this Token.
