There are moments and places in our lives that we claim to "remember as if it were yesterday". A first kiss; a last dinner with college roommates; and yes, even an idyllic waterfall in the middle of the desert. These things sear themselves into our memory, and there they will by their very nature remain. The next romantic encounter will be some ordinal number greater than one, the next meal with those same people will be with acquaintances as opposed to housemates, and the waterfall itself will have eroded a few inches (or in some cases, been completely transformed by floods in the intervening years). There's never a way to go back to the way things were the first time, and it often produces in us a feeling of nostalgia, even while the moments happen.
But if the only sure thing is change, then how are we to approach fleeting and special events in our lives, if we know they'll soon be gone, never to return? Well, I'd argue the solution is (and I say this a lot) to think about our own mortality. At some point, ALL events in our lives, special or mundane, will be elevated to the level of infinitely special, because the eventual alternative is eternal nothingness. Doesn't that mean we should be extra aware of the times we're having now, whether they're good or merely blah? Shouldn't we embrace both the bull AND the bear markets, being thankful to have been in this space at all? Maybe it's just me striving to return to my younger, optimistic days, but I'd say the answer is yes.
